Intelligent and Creative Management

At the AMHA we learn from other's mistakes. Public Housing and the Section 8 programs across the country have a poor reputation, often deservedly earned. Individual agencies and the U.S Department of Housing and Urban Development have repeatedly failed to do their job, and instead have succeeded at mismanagement, bureaucratic overload and financial waste. If you want to see something screwed up, hand it over to the government. Fortunately, we are far removed from the mistakes that are being made across the country. We do not follow the Federal example; we set a higher standard for our goals and policies that end up being followed by other agencies. Housing and Urban Development (HUD) complained for years that we were too harsh in our eviction policies against crime and drug related activity. Five years after our policies began, HUD issued a “one strike you’re out” policy against criminal and drug related offenses that copied our policies almost word-for-word. We have received "high-performing" Public Housing Management Assessment Program grades for seven years running. We have received excellent audits for seven years running.

We use creative strategies to address the socio-economic difficulties that exist for our residents, through communication, caring, and programs designed to solve problems before they start. We have fought for grants to address security needs of not only our developments, but the surrounding communities. We have installed security cameras at some of our developments to insure the safety of all residents and visitors. We listen to resident's ideas and make ideas work so our residents and the community can benefit. We are unconventional for a government agency, and we are successful at what we do because we care.

The Ashtabula Metropolitan Housing Authority is part of this community. All of Ashtabula's resident are neighbors, and together possess the power to make where we live a place to be proud of.

AMHA is taking responsibility for providing safe, decent and affordable housing options for low-and moderate-income people. Our mission is to help build a better community-to build beyond the bricks and mortar of a house. We pledge ourselves to the highest standards of professionalism.
